Curtains or blinds — which does your window actually want?

This is the question we get asked at almost every measurement visit, and the honest answer is that it depends on the room rather than on taste. A west-facing majlis and a second bathroom have completely different problems to solve. Here is how we think about it before we recommend anything.

Choose curtains when the room is for living in. Fabric absorbs sound, softens a hard-surfaced room, and covers full-height villa glazing in a way blinds cannot. Living rooms, bedrooms, majlis and dining rooms almost always look and feel better in curtains. If the room echoes, curtains are the fix.

Choose blinds when the window has a job to do. Kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, home offices and anything narrow or recessed. Blinds sit tight to the glass, wipe clean, tolerate steam and cooking grease, and let you angle daylight away from a screen without losing the view entirely.

Use both when the window faces the afternoon sun. On west and south-facing windows in Doha, the arrangement that works best is a roller or Venetian blind against the glass to take the heat and glare, with a curtain over it for the evening and for the look of the room. It costs more than one or the other, and it is the only combination that genuinely solves both problems.

If you are not sure, that is exactly what the free measurement visit is for. We will look at the orientation, the glazing and how you actually use the room, and tell you which way we would go — including when the cheaper option is the right one.

Why fabric choice matters here

Built for Doha sun, not a European showroom

Most curtain fabric sold in the Gulf was designed for a climate that never sees 45°C or a shamal. It looks the same on the roll and behaves very differently after two summers on a west-facing window. This is what we actually check before recommending anything:

UV fade. Silk and viscose lose colour fast under Gulf sun. Solution-dyed polyester holds it for years, because the colour sits inside the fibre rather than on it.

Heat load. A thermal-lined blackout curtain cuts the solar gain coming through the glass, which takes measurable load off your AC through the worst hours of the afternoon. West and south windows benefit most.

Dust and shamal. Fine sand destroys cheap roller mechanisms and clogs corded tracks. We fit sealed components and recommend fabrics that release dust instead of holding it.

Humidity. Timber blinds swell and warp in kitchens and bathrooms here. Faux wood or aluminium is the honest answer for those rooms, even though it sells for less.

How it works

Four steps, and a date you can hold us to

1

We come to you, free

Anywhere in Doha, with the fabric books. You see the material against your own walls, in your own light — which is the only way to judge colour honestly.

2

We measure every window ourselves

Track width, drop, recess depth, obstructions. We do not work from measurements sent over WhatsApp, because that is where expensive mistakes come from.

3

Fixed written quote

Itemised per window, with fabric, lining, track and fitting shown separately. The number you approve is the number you pay.

4

Manufacture and fitting

Usually 7–10 days from approval. Our own fitters install, adjust the hang, and take the packaging away with them.

The questions we get asked most

How much do curtains cost in Qatar?

Made-to-measure curtains are priced per window, based on fabric, width and drop. Sheers start lowest, blackout and thermal sit mid-range, and motorised tracks add the most. Our published starting ranges are above, and you get a fixed written quote at the measurement visit — the price you agree is the price you pay.

Do blackout curtains actually reduce AC bills?

Yes. A blackout curtain with thermal lining cuts the solar heat entering through the glass, which takes load off your AC during the hottest hours. The effect is largest on west and south-facing windows, which catch the strongest afternoon sun in Doha.

Which fabrics survive Doha's sun without fading?

Solution-dyed polyester and polyester blends hold colour far longer than cotton, silk or viscose under Gulf UV. Silk in particular degrades quickly in direct sun. For heavily exposed windows we recommend a UV-stable outer fabric with a separate lining, so the lining takes the wear and can be replaced on its own later.

How long will my order take?

Most residential orders are measured, made and fitted within 7 to 10 days of fabric approval. Motorised systems and large commercial orders take longer because of track and motor lead times. We confirm your fitting date in writing when you approve the quote.

Is the measurement visit really free?

Yes — free, anywhere in Doha, with no obligation to order. We bring fabric samples so you can see material against your own walls in your own light, which is the only reliable way to judge colour.

How do I measure my own windows?

Measure the track or pole width rather than the glass, then multiply by two to two and a half for proper fullness. For the drop, measure from the top of the track to where you want the hem, adding 8 to 10cm if you want it to break on the floor. Or let us do it — it costs nothing and removes the risk.

Can you fit odd-shaped or very tall windows?

Yes. Everything is cut to the measurements we take on site, so arched, angled and double-height windows are all handled. Villa stairwells and full-height glazing are among our most common jobs.

Do you work with offices and hotels?

Yes. We supply and fit office blinds, hotel curtains, stage curtains and PVC strip curtains for warehouses and cold rooms across Qatar, with phased installation so a working floor or an operating hotel is not disrupted.
